TRAFFIC recently released a report on the status of conservation of Red Panda. It recommended use of platforms like SAWEN for conservation efforts.
TRAFFIC
TRAFFIC is ‘Wildlife Trade Monitoring Network’. It is an international non-governmental body concerned with sustainable trade in wildlife- both animals and plants. It performs 2 functions: green stream work (promotion of sustainable wildlife trade) and the red stream work (curbing wildlife trafficking).
SAWEN
SAWEN is South Asia Wildlife Enforcement Network. It is an inter-governmental body in the South Asian region that acts as a wildlife law enforcement support body. Its focus areas are:
- Harmonisation of policies
- Strengthening of institutional capacities through intelligence and knowledge sharing
- Regional and international collaborations to ensure wildlife law enforcement
SAWEN Members
The member states of SAWEN are Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka. It operates from its secretariat in Kathmandu in Nepal. It was launched in 2011 in Paro, Bhutan. India became a formal member in 2016.
