Minorities Rights Day in India

Minorities Rights Day is observed every year on 18th December in India, with the aim that the normal individual rights as applied to members of a class, religious, ethnic, racial, linguistic or gender and sexual minorities are also accorded to minority groups in the country. The objective of the day is to remind about the rights of minorities and to educate every citizen about it. Minority rights can be as simply applied for an individual right of a person who is not a part of a particular majority. The Constitution of India provides equal rights for all the citizens of the country, under which many measures have also been adopted for safeguarding the rights of any form of minorities in the country.
Under the National Commission for Minorities Act 1992, the National Commission for Minorities (NCM) was set up by the Union Government. Six religious communities- Muslims, Sikhs, Buddhists, Jains, Christians, and Zoroastrians have been notified in as minority communities in Gazette of India by the Union Government all over the country.
On 29th January 2006, the Ministry of Minority Affairs was created as the apex body of the Central government’s developmental and regulatory programs for the minority communities in the country.
