World Suicide Prevention Day

September 10 is observed as World Suicide Prevention Day every year. The day is observed with an objective to create awareness about the mental health and prevent suicides. The theme for both 2019 and 2020 edition is “Working Together to Prevent Suicide”. The International Association for Suicide Prevention (IASP) and World Health Organisation together observe the day. The day is being observed since 2003.

Cases of India

According to a research published by Public Health Foundation of India in 2018, India accounts for over one third of the world’s female suicides while one fourth of male suicides, annually. The rate of suicide was much higher than the global average accounting around 17.8% of global suicides. The report highlighted that age group of 15-39 are most vulnerable to suicide.

World scenario

Across the world, suicide is 10th leading cause of death. More than 1 million people die by suicide every year. This stands at 1.5% of total deaths globally. Suicide is more common in people above the age 70 world wide.

How to Prevent Suicides?

Suicide is a public health and mental health issue in almost every country. The rate of suicides has been increasing gradually up to an extent that it is categorised as one of the leading causes of deaths across the world. Thus, it is becoming important to identify the early signs and factor leading to suicide. The suicides can be prevented by identifying the problem in every dimension that the person might be facing, by understanding risk factors, and by identifying what works best with the individual and society.

International Association for Suicide Prevention (IASP)

IASP is an NGO that works in field of suicide prevention. The Vienna based NGO was established in 1960 by Professor Erwin Ringel and Dr. Norman Faberlow.
