National Informatics Centre

The National Informatics Centre is the foremost information, web services and technical assistance body of the Government of India. Its work is primarily involved in the provisioning of informatics services and information and communication technology (ICT) applications like apps, webpages and other online support for the various government departments.

About NIC-

  • The NIC is the part of the Department of Electronics & Information Technology, Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, Union Government of India.
  • It was established in 1976 to look after the IT needs of the various government departments.
  • While it is headquartered in New Delhi, it has offices in all 28 states and 9 Union Territories administrative places and in all district headquarters.?
  • The NIC plays an important in helping direct the e-governance direction of the Indian government at national, state and district levels and is a key stakeholder in enabling Digital India.
  • The formation and the continuous efforts by NIC have enabled the improvement and allow for oversight and public say due to greater transparency of government services.
  • Most of the websites of various departments of the Indian government are developed and managed by NIC.
  • The NIC also provides network infrastructure and connectivity support to the government departments.

Why is it in the news?

  • The NIC organized the ?Dr. N. Seshagiri Memorial Lecture ? 2019? on August 5 in New Delhi.
  • Dr. N. Seshagiri was a visionary Indian computer scientist who was the founder director-general of NIC and was also the Special Secretary to the Government of India.
  • He played a crucial role in the establishment of the NIC infrastructure and guided the organization in its formative days.

The latest iteration of the Dr. N. Seshagiri Memorial Lecture ? 2019 was delivered by Shri Narayana Murthy, one of the founders of Indian Tech giant Infosys.
