What is CAR T-Cell Therapy?

Researchers recently found that CAR T-Cell therapy is a good cure for Ovarian cancer. The therapy was tested on mice and found to be effective. Immuno suppressive nature of cancer cells in the ovary was a major hurdle for scientists. The recently discovered CAR T-Cell therapy has won this challenge. The therapy works by mutating the CD3 chain. The therapy has already been proven to be effective in curing blood cancer in humans. It is yet to be tested for ovarian cancer. However, it is effective in treating ovarian cancer in mice.

CAR T Cell Therapy

T cells reside in WBC (White Blood Cells). WBC is the major component of the immune system. The body fights against diseases with WBC.

CAR stands for Chimeric Antigen Receptors. CARs are artificial T Cell receptors. They are chimeric; meaning two genes (or proteins in the genes) are fused together. The antigen is the disease-causing component in a virus. Here antigen is the disease-causing component in cancer cells. CARs are capable of attracting disease-causing cancer cells.

CAR T Cell Therapy is integrating CARs with T-cells. That is, injecting CAR into T-cells. In this process, the T-cells are modified to identify cancer cells. After injecting CAR, the T-cells start attracting cancer cells. Once the cancer cells are identified, they can easily be destroyed.

Destroying after identification is done in several ways like drugs or cell proliferation, etc.
