Indian Army conducts Sindhu Sudarshan exercise in Barmer, Rajasthan

The Strike Corps (also known as Sudarshan Chakra Corps) of Indian Army is conducting the annually held exercise, dubbed Sindu Sudarshan-VII, in Barmer, Rajasthan. The annual exercise will test the operational readiness and maneuver warfare capability of Indian Army’s 21 Corps, one of the service’s three so-called Strike Corps. The Corps currently consists of 2 infantry divisions, 1 armored division, and 3 support brigades.

About Sindhu Sudarshan Exercise

Exercise Objective: To validate battle readiness and operational effectiveness of Sudarshan Chakra Corps in an Integrated Air-Land Battle scenario.

Participants: About 40,000 troops, 700 ‘A’ Vehicles and 300 Guns of Sudarshan Chakra Corps of Southern Command. Indian Air Force (IAF) and Indian Army’s Army Aviation Corps (AAC) will participate in war games with an undisclosed number of combat aircraft.

Exercise Part: The 1st part of Sindu Sudarshan-VII’ exercise was held in middle of October with fire power demonstration in Pokhran. The second part of this exercise is being held from 13 to 18 November in Jaisalmer-Barmer desert in Rajasthan and the 3rd part of exercise which will be held between 29 November 29 and 4 December 2019 will also include live firing exercise held in the Pokhran Field Firing Range, Jaisalmer.

Key Component of War Games being conducted in open deserts of Rajasthan will be fast mobilization of Corps, testing its ability to quickly strike deep into enemy terrain with ground forces supported by air power as well as to hone Corps’ combat skills for executing a swift, intense and deep strike in deserts and semi-developed terrain.

The exercise will showcase tanks and other armored vehicles duly supported by overwhelming land and air-based fire power conducting fully integrated operational maneuvers.

The exercise involved live fire drills conducted by: K-9 Vajra 155 mm/52 caliber self-propelled tracked howitzers, Rudra advanced light helicopters and BM-21 Multiple Rocket Launch Systems, among others.
