Election of the 14th Vice President of India

Election for the office of Vice President is being held on August 6, 2022. Office of Vice President is second highest constitutional office in India. M Venkaiah Naidu is the Vice President, currently. His term is scheduled to end on August 10, 2022.

Important points to know;

  • Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu was elected to the office on August 11, 2017.
  • Election for the office of Vice President is conducted by Election Commission of India.
  • According to the rule, election to fill the vacancy due to expiry of term of office of the Vice-President shall be completed before the term of incumbent Vice President expires.

How is Vice President elected?

The Vice-President is elected through an electoral college, comprising of members of Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha. The election is held through a system of proportional representation by means of single transferable vote. Voting is done through a secret ballot.

Eligibility Criteria:

The person shall be a citizen of India and must be of 35 years. He shall be qualified for election as Rajya Sabha Member. A person is not eligible to contest in case he/she is holding any office of profit under central government or state government. Person contesting for the office of Vice President should be nominated by at least 20 MPs as proposers and 20 as seconders. The Vice-President of India also acts as the chairman of Rajya Sabha. He is not the member of Lok Sabha or Rajya Sabha or House of Legislature in any state.
