Varunastra Torpedo

In a significant achievement for the Indian Navy, the Varunastra, an indigenously developed ship-launched anti-submarine heavy-weight torpedo (HWT), has proven its capabilities through a successful test firing on June 6, 2023.

Introducing Varunastra: The Indigenously Developed Torpedo

The Varunastra torpedo, named after the Indian God of Oceans, is a state-of-the-art weapon designed to counter underwater threats. It was developed by the Naval Science and Technological Laboratory (NSTL) of the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO).

Test Firing and Range

During the latest trail, the Varunastra torpedo successfully hit its target after being fired from a submarine at a range of 40 kilometers. This remarkable achievement demonstrates the torpedo’s accuracy and effectiveness in neutralizing submarine threats.

Design and Production

The NSTL, in collaboration with Bharat Dynamics Ltd (BDL), is responsible for designing and producing the Varunastra torpedo. The torpedo’s advanced features and capabilities showcase the expertise and ingenuity of Indian defense organizations.

Extensive Trials and Evaluation

Prior to its induction, the Varunastra torpedo underwent rigorous evaluation and trials. Over 130 technical trials were conducted jointly by the DRDO and the Indian Navy to assess its performance and suitability. The successful completion of these trials paved the way for the torpedo’s induction into the Navy.

Impressive Features and Capabilities

The Varunastra torpedo boasts several advanced technologies that make it a formidable weapon in anti-submarine warfare. With a maximum strike range of 40 kilometers and a top speed exceeding 70 kilometers per hour, it can engage targets effectively. Furthermore, it operates at depths of up to 600 meters, showcasing its versatility and adaptability.

Enhanced Anti-Submarine Warfare Capabilities

One of the key benefits of the Varunastra torpedo is its ability to significantly enhance the Indian Navy’s anti-submarine warfare capabilities. With an active-passive acoustic homing system at its disposal, the Varunastra torpedo demonstrates the capability to proficiently detect and target adversary submarines, even in challenging and noisy underwater conditions. This increased detection and engagement capability provide a strategic advantage.

Achieving Self-Reliance

The successful development of the Varunastra torpedo mark a significant step toward achieving self-reliance in defense capabilities for India. By reducing dependence on foreign weapon systems, the Varunastra strengthens the Navy’s operational independence and enhances national security.
