BRICS Urbanisation Forum

The BRICS Urbanisation Forum, an essential platform for addressing urban development challenges, was inaugurated in New Delhi in February 2013. This year, the forum is set to have its first in-person follow-up in the vibrant South African city of Durban, commencing on July 26. With participation from Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, the forum aims to delve into key urban developmental issues and explore how cities globally are enhancing their resilience to meet emerging challenges.

Advancing Urban Resilience for Sustainable Cities and Towns

Thembi Nkadimeng, the South African Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (CoGTA) and the current chair of BRICS, will preside over the forum centered around the theme of “Advancing urban resilience for sustainable cities and towns for future generations.”. This theme underscores the significance of creating resilient cities capable of overcoming rapid urbanization, climate change, rural-urban migration, and resource constraints.

Inclusive Gathering and Agenda

The forum convenes ministerial delegations, representatives from local governments, policymakers, and various stakeholders to give precedence to crucial urbanization matters. It also provides valuable policy advice to BRICS leaders for action during the upcoming 15th BRICS Summit scheduled for August 22 in Johannesburg.

Key Areas of Discussion

The two-day gathering in Durban will involve comprehensive discussions on building productive and sustainable urban economies, survival strategies in urban environments, and the localization of the UN sustainable development goals. Digital transformation, sustainable human settlements, climate change, and urban water resilience will also come under the spotlight.

Russian President’s Participation

While the heads of state from Brazil, India, China, and South Africa will attend the 15th BRICS Summit in person, Russian President Vladimir Putin will participate online to avoid potential legal complications.

Durban’s Resilience Showcase

Durban, situated within the eThekwini Metro, is the chosen host for the forum. The city will demonstrate its response to the devastating floods of 2022, highlighting successful projects contributing to sustainable development and inclusive growth. Efforts to address infrastructure damage and collaborate towards common goals during crises will be showcased during the event.
