World Ocean Day 2022

The World Oceans Day is observed annually on June 8, to remind people the importance of oceans in sustaining our livelihoods.

Why is World Ocean Day celebrated?

  • The World Ocean Day is celebrated for highlighting the significance of water bodies, as they are home to countless fauna and flora which is a source of life-saving oxygen.
  • As per United Nations (UN), oceans are the lungs of Earth, a critical part of biosphere and a major source of food and medicine.
  • The day also generates awareness regarding human activities such as dumping plastic pollution, oil leaks and garbage disposal, in a bid to send a message to save the oceans.
  • As per UN, the Day informs the public about the impact of human actions on ocean as well as develop a movement of citizens across the oceans.

Theme of World Oceans Day

World Oceans Day 2022 was observed under the theme “Revitalization: Collective Action for the Ocean.”

Background

The idea of observing World Oceans Day was brought by “Oceans Institute of Canada” in 1992, at “Earth Summit” of the UN Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED). Following this, the UN General Assembly passed a resolution after 16 years in 2008 and designated June 8 as World Oceans Day. The day was first observed in 2009 with the theme “’Our Ocean, Our Responsibility”. The idea to observe this day was proposed for celebrating ocean and human connection as well as to raise awareness on crucial role played by oceans in our lives.

Earth Summit

The United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED), also known the Earth Summit, the Rio Summit, Rio de Janeiro Earth Summit, or the Rio Conference. It was held from June 3 to June 14, 1992 in Rio de Janeiro. This summit was created for member states to cooperate on development issues after the Cold War.
