UDID Project

The UDID projected is being implemented since the year 2016 by the Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities (DEPwD), Government of India. The UDID or Unique ID for Persons with Disabilities project is being implemented to create National Database for PwDs, and to issue a Unique Disability Identity Card to each person with disabilities. The Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities (DEPwD) has recently issued a notification making it mandatory for all States and Union Territories to grant certificate of disability through online mode only using the UDID portal. This will come into effect from 1st June, 2021.

Benefits of the Unique ID for Persons with Disabilities project

  • Online availability of data of Persons with Disabilities across the country through a centralized web application.
  • Online filing and submission of registration application form for disability certificate or Universal ID card.
  • Quick Assessment process for calculating the percentage of disability by the hospitals.
  • PWDs data will not be duplicated.
  • Through the UDID project online renewal and update of information by Person with Disabilities by them or on their behalf will be easier.
  • The UDID project will encourage transparency.
  • Efficiency and ease of delivering the government benefits to the person with disabilities.
  • Financial progress of beneficiaries at all levels of hierarchy can be tracked starting from the village level, block level, District level , State level and to the National level.
  • The UDID card will be the single document of identification, verification of the disabled for availing various benefits in future and hence the PWDs will not need to carry multiple documents with them.

Who all can apply for the UDID card?

As per the Persons of Disabilities Act 1995, the persons with only the given types of disability can apply for the UDID card. They are:

  • Cerebral Palsy.
  • Low Vision.
  • Locomotor Disability.
  • Leprosy Cured.
  • Mental Retardation.
  • Mental Illness.
  • Hearing Impairment.

  • Personal Details including address.
  • Disability Details.
  • Employment Details.
  • Identity Details.

About Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities:

Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities comes under Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment was set up in the month of May in the year 2012.

The Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities was set up with the aim to facilitate empowerment and inclusion of the persons with disabilities and acts as a nodal agency to look after all the development agenda of Persons with Disabilities.
