“Observing Road Safety Week: A National Effort for Safer Roads”

The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, Government of India, is observing the Road Safety Week from January 11th to 17th, 2023, as part of the “Swachhata Pakhwada” initiative. The week-long observance aims to propagate the cause of safer roads for all and create awareness among the general public about the importance of road safety.

Creating Awareness

During the Road Safety Week, various activities are being organized throughout the country to create awareness among all stakeholders, including school and college students, drivers, and other road users. These activities include Nukkad Nataks (Street Shows) and Sensitization Campaigns at various locations in the Capital, as well as essay writing and poster making competitions for school students.

Exhibition & Theatre Pavilion

Corporates, PSUs, and NGOs actively working in the field of road safety will also organize exhibitions and theatre pavilions to educate the public about the causes of road accidents and measures to prevent them. Additionally, Walkathon and talks/interactions with senior officers will be held at the Indian Agricultural Research Institute (IARI), Pusa, Delhi.

Enforcement of Rules & Regulations

Road owning agencies such as NHAI, NHIDCL will conduct special drives throughout the country related to compliance of traffic rules and regulations, pedestrian safety, eye check-up camps for drivers, and other road engineering-related initiatives.

Involvement of Stakeholders

The Ministry has requested all Members of Parliament, State Governments, and related stakeholders (including corporates, PSUs, NGOs, etc.) to actively participate in the event by conducting awareness campaigns about road safety, first responder training, ensuring strict enforcement of rules & regulations up to grass root levels, and conducting other activities, workshops & advocacy programs related to road safety.

The observance of Road Safety Week is a national effort that brings together all stakeholders to promote road safety and raise awareness about the importance of safer roads for all. With the active participation of the government, citizens, and other stakeholders, it is hoped that the week-long observance will lead to a reduction in road accidents and make our roads safer for all.
