DNA Fingerprinting

DNA fingerprinting is a method used to identify an individual from a sample of DNA. It simultaneously detects lots of minisatellites in the genome to produce a pattern unique to an individual. The probability of having two people with the same DNA fingerprint that are not identical twins is very small.

The DNA of each individual is composed of Bases [Adenine (A), Thymine (T), Guanine (G), and Cytosine (C)], Sugar and a Phosphate. Two bases link to each other using hydrogen bonds to form base pairs.

The DNA Fingerprinting technology can be used for

  • Criminal identification
  • Identification of paternity and maternity
  • Identification of mutilated remains
  • In forensic wildlife (Identification of plants and animals species)
