BIS Portal for mapping of Industrial Units and Labs

Union Minister for Commerce and Industry Piyush Goyal emphasized the importance of quality in India’s development at the 76th Foundation Day of the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) in New Delhi. Goyal pointed out that developed nations that adopted a focus on quality in their early stages of development progressed faster and were able to engage with the world from a position of strength, leading to high quality products, goods, and services, and ultimately, a higher quality of life for their citizens.

Goyal launched several initiatives at the BIS Foundation Day event, including a portal for mapping industrial units and laboratories, standard clubs in schools, the Standards National Action Plan 2022-27, and revised versions of the National Building Code of India and the National Electrical Code of India.

Portal for Mapping Industrial Units and Laboratories

The portal launched by Goyal serves as a central platform for information on industrial units and laboratories across India. It will allow for analysis of test facilities in the country and provide entrepreneurs with access to information about testing facilities.

Standard Clubs in Schools

The BIS also aims to expose science students in grades 9 and above to the concepts of quality and standardization through student-centric activities with the establishment of standard clubs in schools. So far, over 4,000 standard clubs have been established across India, with a target of 10,000 by the end of 2022-23.

Standards National Action Plan 2022-27

The Standards National Action Plan (SNAP) 2022-27 aims to strengthen the quality culture in India and serve as a foundation for standardization to meet the emerging technologies and concerns of sustainability and climate change. Goyal stated that the SNAP “lays down the roadmap on which we will all have to work to make quality a part of the very thinking and philosophy of every citizen in our country.”

Revised National Building Code of India

Through the National Building Code Sectional Committee, the BIS is initiating the revision of the National Building Code of India to include sustainable city planning norms, new and sustainable building materials, design concepts, construction technologies, and building and plumbing services.

Revised National Electrical Code of India

The revised National Electrical Code of India, set to launch in 2023, aims to regulate electrical installation practices across the country. India’s first National Electrical Code was formulated in 1985 and revised in 2011. The revised NEC includes new chapters on requirements for electrical installations in special locations such as hospitals, community facilities, hotels, swimming pools, amusement parks, supplies for electric vehicles, and multi-storied buildings.

Zero Effect, Zero Defect

Goyal also referred to the prime minister’s call for zero effect, zero defect, stating that it will help the country produce high-quality goods and services for the benefit of its citizens. He emphasized the importance of zero defects as the “urgent call of the hour.”
