First edition of “Indian Young Water Professionals Programme” launched

First edition of the Indian Young Water Professionals Programme was launched on November 29, 2021 virtually.

Key points

  • Programme was launched in the presence of Indian High Commissioner to Australia, Manpreet Vohra; Australian High Commissioner to India, Barry O’ Farrell and Additional Secretary of Ministry of Jal Shakti, Debashree Mukherjee.
  • This launch was joined by more than 100 participants.
  • The program was taken up under National Hydrology Project.
  • National Hydrology Project is a Central Scheme of DOWR, and RD & GR. It is supported by Australian Water Partnership.

Indian Young Water Professionals Programme

  • The India Young Water Professional Programme is unique and different from typical capacity building and training programs.
  • It focuses on Engaged Training and Learning Model.
  • 70% of this program is focused on project-based learning by means of Situation Understanding and Improvement Projects (SUIP).
  • It also focuses on gender equality and diversity, since sustainable water management can only benefit from the skills and views of all members of society.
  • For the first edition of the programme, about 20 participants have been selected, comprising of 10 men and 10 women, from central & state implementing agencies of National Hydrology Project.

India-Australia collaboration on water

Water is a key priority area of the relation between India and Australia. Both the countries are actively working on this front. Young Water Professional Program is significant milestone in the relationship between both the countries. It will help in institutional strengthening and capacity building. This program will also help in breaking the silos of surface water as well as groundwater. Participants will get to learn to take a comprehensive view of water resources management.

Background

The seed for this Program were sowed in November 2019, during a co-design workshop with National Hydrology Project (NHP) on ‘Sustainable Water Management’. This Program will be implemented by Australia India Water Centre, which is a consortium of Australian and Indian universities.
