Democracy Cohort on Election Integrity

The Election Commission has announced that it will be leading the ‘Democracy Cohort on Election Integrity’ as part of the ‘Summit for Democracy’ in association with 100 democratic countries. At this summit expertise and experience will be shared with the poll management bodies of various countries.

Who are the participants of this summit and what will the Election Commission of India provide?

Leaders from over 100 countries, the private sector, civil society organizations, media, etc will be participating in this summit. The Indian Election Commission will be providing capacity building and training programmes to the various Election Management Bodies (EMBs) across the globe as per the needs of the various EMBs.

What is the Democracy Cohort Platform?

It is a thematic, multi-stakeholder group that is open to the participation of civil society and official government. Some themes that will be discussed under this platform are in the ‘Summit for Democracy’ are:

  • Free and Independent media
  • Election Integrity
  • Bolstering democratic reformers
  • Fighting corruption
  • Digital governance
  • Advancing technology for democracy
  • Disinformation
  • Inclusive democracy
  • Anti-discrimination.

These Democracy Cohorts will help refine the commitments of the Democracy Summit. It will also highlight the progress on the implementation of these commitments as well as develop new commitments.

What is the Summit for Democracy?

This is an initiative of the US President having the aim of renewing the democratic spirit of the nations across the globe. The Global Summit for Democracy is a summit that is held annually. The 2022 Summit for Democracy will be an in-person meeting.

What are the themes of the Global Summit for Democracy?

The summit will be on three themes which are:

  • Fighting corruption
  • Defending against authoritarianism
  • Promoting respect for human rights

What are the goals of the Global Summit for Democracy?

The Global Summit for Democracy has the goal of bringing together democracies from across the planet so as to strengthen their individual democratic institutions. It also looks to confront the challenge of the nations and construct a common agenda to address all the issues that are threatening the world’s common values.
