Srivilliputhur Megamalai Tiger Reserve
Srivilliputhur Megamalai Tiger Reserve (SMTR) is set to become the fifth tiger reserve in Tamil Nadu and the 51st in the overall country. It will cover forests of Megamalai wildlife sanctuary and Srivilliputhur grizzled squirrel wildlife sanctuary in the districts of Theni, Virudhunagar and Madurai. At least 14 tigers are estimated to be living in this region. The new reserve will also act as a buffer for Periyar Tiger Reserve in Kerala.
