Introduction of a Bill to amend the Constitution (Scheduled Tribes) Order, 1950

The Government has proposed a bill to amend the Constitution (Scheduled Tribes) Order, 1950. The features of the proposed amendment are:

  • On the basis of recommendation the government of Karnataka, it has been proposed to amend Constitution (Scheduled Tribes) Order, 1950 relating to Karnataka. The amendment aims to grant Scheduled Tribe status to the communities, namely Parivara and Talawara which are Synonyms of Nayaka and Siddi community of Dharwad and Belagavi districts along with existing ‘Siddi’ community of Uttar Kannada district.
  • On the basis of recommendation the government of Assam, it has been proposed to amend Constitution (Scheduled Tribes) Order, 1950 relating to Assam. The amendment aims to grant Scheduled Tribe status to the communities, namely Chutiya, Matak, Moran, Koch Rajbongshi, Tai Ahom and states’ 36 tea tribes.

The persons belonging to the above-mentioned communities would become eligible to get benefits meant for the Scheduled Tribes in the respective States, once the bill is passed in the parliament.
