NTPC inks pact worth Rs 43 cr with EGCB, Bangladesh

  • NTPC Ltd, country s largest state-owned power generator, signed a Contract Agreement worth Rs 43 crore with Electricity Generation Company of Bangladesh Ltd (EGCB) for providing Operation and Maintenance Services (OMS) to 2×120 MW Gas based Siddhirganj power plant, Dhaka. This is the largest single international order received by NTPC.

Book on ULFA’s history out

  • A book titled “ULFA” in Assamese language co-authored by Mr Talukdar and lawyer-writer Kishore Kumar Kalita, tracing the origin of the banned United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA), the Assam’s most powerful militant outfit launched. The ULFA, most-discussed and debated subject of Assam s social life, is now standing at a crucial turn of history as the organisation is now divided in two groups, with the majority taking the peace talk route. At this critical juncture, the Nanda Talukdar Foundation and Bhabani Books have jointly published the history of the organisation.

China won’t attack India: PM

  • Dismissing perceptions of threat following reports that Beijing was building a military base in the Indian Ocean, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh Wednesday said his government didn’t believe China would attack India.

Parliament passes LIC amendment bill

  • Parliament passed the Life Insurance Corporation (Amendment) Bill that seeks to increase the company’s paid-up capital to Rs.100 crore from the existing Rs.5 crore and create a separate fund for its expansion.

  • Giving retail consumers instant access to their mutual fund investments, Reliance Mutual Fund launched the Reliance Any Time Money Card.

Sukhoi-30 fighter plane crashes

  • A Sukhoi-30 (Su-30)-MKI fighter aircraft of the Indian Air Force (IAF) crashed just after landing while on a routine mission. The aircraft had taken off from the Lohegaon airbase near Pune. This is the third crash of the Russian origin Su-30 fighter planes since they were inducted into the IAF in 1997.Two Su-30s crashed in 2009.

Palestinian flag raised at UNESCO

  • The Palestinian flag was raised for the first time above a U.N. agency, the UNESCO headquarters in Paris, in a diplomatic victory won despite stiff resistance from the U.S. and Israel.

  • Industrialist and Labour peer Swraj Paul was given the lifetime achievement award instituted by an Indian company, Powerbrands for his outstanding contributions in various fields.

100 years – Amundsen’s dash to immortality

  • On December 14, 1911, Norwegian Roald Amundsen became the first explorer to reach the geographical South Pole – the southernmost tip of the Earth.
