Sant Sevalal Maharaj Jayanti

Sevala Maharaj was a spiritual guru and a socio-religious reformer from the Banjara community. He lived between 1739 and 1773. He was against animal sacrifices and baptism. The culture ministry recently announced that the Government of India will launch yearlong celebrations marking the 284th birth anniversary of the reformer. Banjara Community is a Scheduled Tribe community.

Banjara Community

The Banjara people are also known as the Lambadi or the Labana or Gour Rajput. They were nomadic and are believed to have come from the Mewar region of Rajasthan. There are 17 subgroups in the community.

The language of Banjaras is Gour Boli, an Indo-Aryan language. They are ST in AP, Telangana, and Odisha. They are categorized under SC in Delhi, Karnataka, and Punjab. They are OBC in MP, Haryana, Gujarat, Chhattisgarh, Rajasthan, and Maharashtra.
