Extension of last date: Hallmarking of precious metals to be mandatory from 1st June 2021

Minister of Consumer Affairs, Sh. Ram Vilas Paswan has declared the provision of mandatory hallmarking of precious metals like gold jewellery and artifacts will be effective from 1st June next year.

  • The Govt. had announced mandatory hallmarking in November, last year.
  • The announcement of the extension has been made during the launching ceremony of the online system of Registration and Renewal of Jewellers considering the ongoing pandemic outbreak.
  • Submission of applications, testimonials, fees will be available online for the Jewellers to obtain a license.
  • After the payment of the fees is done, registration will be granted.

What is Hallmarking?

Hallmarking is a certification process for accurate determination and official recording of precious metal. It ensures the purity and fineness of the metal.

How many Hallmarking centers are in India?

At present, a total of 921 Hallmarking Centers are there in India. The Bureau of Indian Standards is working on setting up Hallmarking centers in remaining areas by June 2021.
