INST’s Material for Pseudocapacitor

The Institute of Nano Science and Technology has developed a stable material for preparation of organic pseudocapacitors for energy storage.

Pseudocapacitor

Pseudocapacitor is a type of supercapacitor that is used to store electrical energy through the process of electron charge transfer between the electrode and the electrolyte. While double layer capacitors store charge electrostatically, the pseudocapacitors store charge electrochemically.

Xerogel

The stable material developed by INST is an example for hybrid xerogel structures. Xerogels are solids that are formed by drying a gel with unhindered shrinkage. They have high porosity and hence high surface area. The xerogel material developed by INST is a hybrid of organic and inorganic compounds.

About the Material

The INST material can be used in development of energy storage solutions that can serve as an alternative to battery-based storage. It is a low cost and scalable solution. It was prepared by integration of dopamine (an organic molecule) into a matrix of graphene (inorganic structure).
