World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims observed

  • The International Road Federation (IRF) observed the World Day for Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims. The United Nations had endorsed it in 2005 as a global day to be observed every third Sunday in November each year, making it a major advocacy day for road traffic injury prevention.

Pranab admits leakage of funds in MNREGA

  • Admitting that leakage of funds was taking place in MNREGA, Union Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee called for spread of banking facilities in the rural areas to check corruption. He opined that if passage of funds to the recipients for schemes like MNREGA, old age pension, etc can be routed through the banking system, then leakage will stop and corruption will decrease.

Delhi Metro opens winter old age home

  • The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has opened an Old Age Winter Home for senior male citizens in south Delhi as part of its corporate social responsibility activities. It has the capacity to accommodate about 45 to 50 persons. DMRC will provide all the basic necessities such as beds, pillows, blankets, chairs, water dispenser plates, glasses to the occupants. The old age home, which has been opened in association with the NGO Help Age India, will serve dinner, breakfast and tea to the occupants and basic medical assistance will also be provided to them.

Tuirial project to be completed by 2014

  • The abandoned Tuirial hydro power project, revived from April this year, is expected to generate power by 2014. The public investment board (PIB) had last year given its nod to the Union power ministry’s proposal to revive the 60MW hydel project near Bilkhawtlir, about 135km from Aizawl. Works on the hydel project to produce electricity by harnessing the Tuirial river.

Bureaucrats running Panchayats will weaken democracy: Pranab

  • In an apparent jibe at the Trinamool Congress-led West Bengal Government’s purported plans to run Panchayat bodies through bureaucrats by overriding elected representatives, Union Finance Minister and senior Congress leader Pranab Mukherjee opined that this would not strengthen the democratic infrastructure.

India-Bangladesh virtually finalises draft extradition treaty

  • India and Bangladesh during the Secretary level talks have virtually finalised the draft extradition treaty which would facilitate handing over of ULFA.
  • India is keen to have Chetia, languishing in a Bangladesh jail after having completed his sentence following his arrest in 1997 on the charge of entering that country without any valid documents.
  • The extradition treaty, is also expected to lead to India s handing over of Riasaldar Mosleuddin who killed Bangladesh’s independence architect Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, father of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, in August 1975. Mosleuddin is believed to be hiding in India. The Hasina government has been seeking Mosleuddin to put him on trial in connection with Mujib assassination.

  • Exports of horses from South Africa have been hit after the UAE, a major importer of the animals, slapped a ban on them following a deadly disease

  • The co-founder of Google, Sergei Brin, has donated $500,000 to Wikipedia’s foundation

  • Sixty-one years after Jawaharlal Nehru last visited this island state, Singapore commemorates in stone India’s first prime minister as a “friend to our shores”.

IAEA resolution not to stop Iran’s nuclear programme
