Police Commemoration Day

Every year, the National Police Commemoration Day is celebrated on October 21. It is also called Police Martyr’s Day.

About Police Commemoration Day

The day is observed to salute the police officers and their families. Also, it is marked to salute the police officers who lost their lives fighting for the country.

Why is Police Commemoration Day celebrated?

On October 21, 1959, twenty CRPF (Central Police Reserve Force) men were attacked by the Chinese soldiers in Ladakh. They were attacked near the Indo-Tibetan border during their patrol. The CRPF men died during the attack. The day is marked to commemorate the sacrifices of these police men.

National Police Memorial

On October 21, 2018, the Prime Minister Narendra Modi renovated the National Police memorial.  The National Police Memorial is located in New Delhi. It commemorates 34,844 police men who had died in the line of duty since 1947. The memorial consists of 30-foot-tall granite sculpture. The sculpture weighs 238 tonnes. The sculpture bears the names of all the 34,844 police men. It also has an underground museum. It is the first underground museum in India. The museum showcases over 2,000 years of policing. It includes policing followed in the country since Kautilya’s period, which is around 310 BCE.
