PARAM PORUL Supercomputer

PARAM PORUL, a state-of-the-art Supercomputer was inaugurated at NIT Tiruchirappalli on the 25th of May 2022 in a joint initiative by the Department of Science and Technology (DST) and the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY). This newly inaugurated supercomputing facility has been established under Phase 2 of the National Supercomputing Mission (NSM). The majority of the components that have been used to build this supercomputer have been assembled and manufactured in India. This includes the software stack that has been developed indigenously by the Centre for Development in Advanced Computing (C-DAC), keeping in line with the government’s Make in India initiative. NIT Tiruchirappalli has been performing research in various sectors like Agriculture, Health, Financial Services, and Weather.

What is the PARAM PORUL system?

This system is based on Direct Contact Liquid Cooling technology so that it can obtain high-power usage effectiveness. This helps in reducing the operational cost. The system has been equipped with a mix of:

  • GPU nodes
  • CPU nodes
  • High throughput storage
  • High Memory nodes
  • High-performance Infiniband interconnect

All these have been equipped in this system to cater to the computing needs of various engineering and scientific applications. On 12th October 2020, C-DAC and NIT Tiruchirappalli signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to establish this 838 TeraFlops Supercomputing facility.

What are the benefits of installing the PARAM PORUL system?

This facility has been installed under the NSM and will be strengthening research across various fields. The super computational facility will also be aiding researchers to solve wide-ranging problems in different areas of Engineering and Science. This facility will also be providing a boost to the research and development initiatives that are undertaken in Indian industries and academia. Also, on this system, multiple applications from various scientific fields have been installed like:

  • Bioinformatics
  • Weather and Climate
  • Molecular Dynamics
  • Computational Chemistry
  • Computational Fluid Dynamics
  • Material Sciences, etc.

What is the National Supercomputing Mission?

The NSM was launched in the year 2015 at an estimated cost of Rs.4500 crore over seven years. The aim of the NSM is to empower the country’s R&D and academic institutions by installing a vast supercomputing grid that will comprise over 70 high-performance computing facilities. To date, under NSM, 15 supercomputers have been installed across the country with 24 petaflops of computing capacity. They are all developed indigenously and are operating with an indigenously developed software stack. The Mission also has the aim of developing High-Performance Computing (HPC) aware human resources so as to meet the challenges of developing these applications.
