Pakke Declaration

The Pakke Declaration was adopted by the State Government of Arunachal Pradesh.

What is Pakke Declaration?

The Pakke Declaration is also called the “Pakke Tiger Reserve 2047 Declaration on Climate Change Resilient and Responsive Arunachal Pradesh”. The declaration focuses on low emission and climate resilient development. It is the first of its kind by any state government in India.

What are the themes of Pakke Declaration?

There are five main themes of Pakke Declaration. They are also called “Panch Dharas”. They are as follows:

  • Environment, Forest and Climate Change
  • Health and Well-being for all
  • Sustainable and Adaptive living
  • Livelihoods and opportunities
  • Evidence generation and collaborative actions

What are the actions of Pakke Declaration?

Under the Pakke Declaration, the State Government of Arunachal Pradesh will implement the following actions:

  • Protecting forest cover
  • Restoring upgraded forests
  • Reducing health vulnerability due to climate change and extreme weather events
  • Developing master plans for urban areas (Plans are to be developed based on local climate change induced risks)
  • Adopting efficient irrigation measures
  • Promote entrepreneurship

What are the benefits of Pakke Declaration?

It will benefit the future generation largely. Also, the declaration will help India achieve its fulfilment of targets in its pursuance of Paris Agreement on Climate Change. The Pakke Declaration will protect the people from climate change related risks.

Why the name “Pakke”?

The Pakke Tiger Reserve is located in Pakke district of Arunachal Pradesh. For the first time, the state cabinet went all the way to the reserve only to pass the declaration in November 2021. The Pakke Tiger Reserve falls in the Eastern Himalaya Biodiversity Hotspot.
