New Space India Limited

To promote the commercial utilization of the significant technical capabilities developed in the Indian Space industry, the Department of Space has incorporated the New Space India Limited under its administrative control. The NSIL was registered on March 6, 2019.

What is NSIL?

  • The NSIL is the second (after Antrix) commercial arm of the Department of Space which was provided with an authorized share capital of Rs 100 crores and a capital of Rs 10 crores.
  • It has been incorporated to ensure the sub-licensing of Small Satellite technology transfer to the private industry, (NSIL will obtain a license from DOS/ISRO and sub-license it to Industries)
  • It will also the manufacturing of Small Satellite Launch Vehicle (SSLV) in collaboration with Private Sector.
  • It will also aim to out for the Productionisation of Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV) and marketing of Space-based products and services, including launch and application with the help of the industry.
  • The NSIL would enable the transfer of technology (ToT) developed by ISRO and other constituent units of DOS.
  • It was set up to satisfy the ever-increasing demands of the Indian space program.
  • The establishment of the NSIL would enable Indian space firms to commercially exploit the emerging global space launch and satellite manufacturing market.  

Antrix Corporation

The Antrix is also a commercial venture of the ISRO under the full administrative control of the Department of Space.

It had arranged for the launch of 239 satellites in the past 3 years and earned a total revenue of Rs 6,289 crores for the government.

However, of late, it has come to involved in a few controversies.
