National Museum of Customs and GST

As a part of Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav, Union Finance Minister, Nirmala Sitharaman inaugurated the “National Museum of Customs and GST”.

Highlights

  • The National Museum of Customs and GST called “Dharohar” was inaugurated in Goa.
  • Museum was inaugurated as part of Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav Iconic week (June 6 to June 12, 2022) of Ministry of Finance.

Background

Dharohar is a two-storey ‘Blue building’, which was known as Alfandega, during the Portuguese rule in Goa. It has been standing in Panaji, on the banks of River Mandovi, for more than 400 years.

About Dharohar

Dharohar is first of its kind museum in India, that will showcase the artefacts seized by Indian Customs as well as depicts multiple aspects of work performed by Customs Department while safeguarding economic frontiers of India, flora & fauna, India’s heritage and society. The museum has 8 galleries namely,

  1. Introductory gallery
  2. History of Taxation Gallery
  3. Guardians of our economic frontier’s gallery
  4. Guardians of our Art & Heritage
  5. Guardians of Flora & Fauna
  6. Custodians of our social wellbeing
  7. Journey of Indirect taxes -Salt Tax to GST and
  8. GST gallery.

Significance of the Museum

It provides rare opportunity of understanding the working of Financial Department over the years.

Portuguese Rule in Goa

Portuguese invaded Goa in 1510 after defeating the Bijapur Sultanate. Rule of the Portuguese lasted for around 450 years. It heavily influenced Goan culture, architecture and cuisine. India invaded and annexed Goa in 1961, after a 36-hours battle. It was incorporated as Union territory of Goa, Daman and Diu. Goa was granted statehood in 1987.
