Karnataka: Namma Cargo services Launched

The Chief Minister of Karnataka, B.S. Yediyurappa, launched the ‘Namma Cargo’ services on February 26, 2021.

Namma Cargo Services

  • The service was launched at the Vidhana Soudha.
  • At this place, the State road transport corporations will transport the parcels so as to generate more revenue, except for the Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC).
  • The Cargo services will be implemented across 109 bus stations in Karnataka.
  • It will also be implemented across the selected locations in Andhra Pradesh, Goa, Telangana, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu and Kerala.
  • With the launch of the services, the Transport Department estimates that the luggage revenue generation will increase up to ₹70 crore to ₹80 crore per year.
  • In the first phase of the “Namma Cargo Services” will operate in 88 taluks of Karnataka and at 21 inter-State locations.
  • The Transport Department has also aimed to expand the service in order to provide home deliveries.

Background

The operations by three road transport corporations namely, NWKRTC, KSRTC, and NEKRTC would cover 51 lakh km comprising of 14,500 schedules and. It also carries 38 lakh passengers per day.

How the name was decided?

‘Namma Cargo’ name was chosen for the services following a contest. The name emerged as the winning entry for the contest which was launched by the KSRTC in order to suggest names for this parcel and cargo services.

Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC)

It is a government agency operating the public transport bus service in Bengaluru. BMTC has the highest number of Volvo buses that is operated by a public transport company in the country. Currently, C.Shikha is working as the Managing Director of BMTC.
