Maharashtra to Use Drones to Inspect Power Lines

For the first time in India, Maharashtra State Electricity Transport Company (MSETCL) has started taking the help of drones in order to inspect power transmission lines in the state. It has been disclosed by the state power ministry. It has been approved by the Union Home Ministry and the Director-General of Civil Aviation after the same had been proposed by the Maharashtra Energy Minister Nitin Raut.

Unmanned Aerial Vehicles are now being used in order to carry out aerial surveillance and inspection of Extra High Voltage lines and towers in the remote areas of the state. This step will reduce the maintenance costs and losses from outages and also the process is more efficient than the manual survey of power lines. Drones can also detect the faults more effectively in the power lines within a quick time.

The UAVs have been equipped with ultra HD cameras which are capable of taking high-resolution close-up photographs and videos of the towers and their components.
