1st model village built with Indian assistance inaugurated in Sri Lanka

The first model village built with Indian assistance under the Model Villages Program was inaugurated at Ranidugama in Gampaha in Sri Lanka. It is a part of housing project meant for war affected people and estate workers. The fully constructed houses were handed over to beneficiaries.

Key Highlights

Background: India has partnered with Sri Lankan Ministry of Housing and Construction and Cultural Affairs to build 100 model villages which will consist of a total of 2400 houses all across Sri Lanka. These 2400 houses are in addition to 60000 accommodations built under Indian Housing Project meant for war affected people in north and east Sri Lanka and estate workers in plantation areas of the country.

Grant: The Indian grant for the project would be Rs.1,200 million ($17.5 million).

Other Development Projects by India in Sri Lanka: India has undertaken over 70 people-oriented development projects across Sri Lanka in various fields such as health, skill development, education, housing, infrastructure and vocational training among other. It also includes largest University Auditorium in Ruhuna University in Matara in Sri Lanka. Around 20 such projects are currently under progress.
