On 27th July, India’s Union Home Minister and Minister of Cooperation, Amit Shah inaugurated a significant initiative known as ‘Mera Gaon Meri Dharohar’ (MGMD). The project is initiated by the Ministry of Culture and aims to culturally map India’s 6.5 lakh villages across 29 states and 7 union territories.

Mera Gaon Meri Dharohar (MGMD) Initiative

The ‘Mera Gaon Meri Dharohar’ initiative, also known as MGMD, is a pan-India project spearheaded by the Ministry of Culture under the National Mission on Cultural Mapping. The project seeks to create a comprehensive virtual platform that connects people with the diverse cultural heritage of India’s villages.

Objectives of MGMD

The primary objective of the MGMD project is to culturally map India’s vast network of villages, encompassing 6.5 lakh villages across the country. By doing so, it aims to showcase and preserve the rich cultural diversity and vibrant traditions present in these rural communities. The project aspires to bring to the forefront the hidden treasures of Indian culture and heritage, encouraging people to take pride in their roots.

Encouraging Appreciation for India’s Culture and Traditions

The core idea behind ‘Mera Gaon Meri Dharohar’ is to instill a sense of appreciation and pride for India’s cultural heritage. By showcasing the diverse cultural wonders each village has to offer, the initiative hopes to foster a deeper understanding and respect for the traditions that have been passed down through generations.

Coordinating Efforts with IGNCA

To execute this ambitious project successfully, the Ministry of Culture is working in coordination with the Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts (IGNCA). The IGNCA’s expertise in cultural mapping and preservation plays a crucial role in ensuring the accuracy and authenticity of the information presented on the virtual platform.

Samvaad Program: Connecting People and Cultures

As part of the launch event, the ‘Mera Gaon Meri Dharohar’ initiative will feature a “Samvaad” program. This unique opportunity allows people from different villages to interact with each other and engage in meaningful conversations with the minister. The Samvaad program aims to bridge the gap between urban and rural communities, fostering unity and understanding among India’s diverse populace.
