India’s Agriculture Exports in 2021-22

For FY 2021-22, the exports of agricultural products, including plantation and marine products of India have touched a record USD 50 billion. This is a 20 per cent increase from last year.

Overview:

  • This growth in export has been achieved due to a surge in shipments of marine products, rice, buffalo meat, sugar, wheat, and raw cotton.
  • This growth has been achieved despite facing logistical challenges like container shortages, high freight rates, etc.
  • This increase in the growth of agriculture export will also enhance the income of the farmers of the country.

Items that achieved the highest exports

The highest ever exports have been achieved by

  • rice (USD 9.65 billion)
  • wheat (USD 2.19 billion)
  • sugar (USD 4.6 billion)
  • other cereals (USD 1.08 billion).

There was also a spike in wheat shipment to USD 2.1 billion (273 per cent increase) in 2021-22 as compared to the previous year.

The farmers of which states have been benefited

Due to the increase in agri-exports, the farmers in Haryana, Punjab, Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, West Bengal, Telangana, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, etc have benefited.

The export of marine products which stands at USD 7.71 billion has benefitted farmers of West Bengal, Odisha, Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Gujarat, and Maharashtra.

Spices Export

The export of Spices has touched USD 4 billion.

Coffee Export

For the first time, coffee exports crossed USD 1 billion and have helped in enhancing the income of coffee growers in Kerala, Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu.

Reasons for the increase in agriculture exports

Agriculture exports have increased due to sustained efforts by the commerce departments like the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA), the Marine Products Export Development Authority (MPEDA) and various commodity boards in India.
