C295 Military Transport Aircraft

India’s aerospace industry is set to receive a significant boost with the establishment of a fully operational factory in Vadodara, Gujarat, by November 2024. This factory will play a pivotal role in the production of the first Indian-made military transport aircraft, the C295. Under the ambitious ‘Make in India’ Aerospace program, the aim is to strengthen India’s manufacturing capabilities in the private sector.

The Arrival of the C295

In September 2021, India finalized the acquisition of 56 Airbus C295 aircraft, marking a significant milestone in the country’s defense capabilities. The first 16 aircraft will be delivered from the final assembly line in Seville, Spain. An industrial collaboration between Tata Advanced Systems (TASL) and the Indian government will oversee the manufacturing and assembly of the remaining 40 aircraft within the country.

Empowering Indian Manufacturing

For many years, Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) held a monopoly over military aircraft production in India. However, the ‘Make in India’ program seeks to diversify and enhance the country’s manufacturing capabilities. The establishment of a fully operational factory in Vadodara signifies a significant step toward achieving this goal.

Technical Specifications and Role

The C295 aircraft boasts an extensive airframe, comprising over 14,000 parts and components. Designed to operate on short and unpaved runways, the C295 will play a vital role in the IAF’s transport duties. With its ability to carry troops, material, and even paratroopers, the C295 will provide enhanced capabilities for the swift and efficient movement of resources across the country.

Future Prospects

The successful implementation of the ‘Make in India’ program for the C295 aircraft demonstrates India’s commitment to fostering indigenous manufacturing capabilities. The program is expected to create approximately 15,000 high-skilled jobs and an additional 10,000 indirect jobs within the next decade, bolstering India’s aerospace sector.
