MCI makes Pandemic Management a part of MBBS Course

The Medical Council of India (MCI) which regulates medical education in the country recently launched a notification which indicates medical colleges to include Pandemic Management in the Under Graduated course starting this year.

About the Course

Considering the need of the hour, A group of experts which includes senior doctors from AIIMS (All India Institute of Medical Sciences) in Delhi, senior doctors from Sri Ramachandra Medical College and Research Institute in Chennai, Former directors and Dean of KEM Hospital along with the senior esteemed delegates from the Medical Council of India came into a consensus that Pandemic Management is a must to tackle any future global pandemic like COVID-19. The group suggested the introduction of a module to teach young minds, how to tackle such pandemic in future.

The module very widely covers the history of outbreaks, epidemics and pandemics, infection control practices, serologic tests and their performance parameters, sample collection, microbial diagnosis, and care of patients during pandemics.

The need for the Module

The aforesaid pandemic management module is designed in such a way that, the MBBS student acquires knowledge in handling not only the illness but also the social, legal and other issues arising from such disease outbreaks. Our medical graduates must possess the skill to investigate, treat, and prevent any new such fatalities. The unfolding of Covid-19 and its rapid spread across the globe has further highlighted the need to develop these skills in our medical graduates.
