The festival is celebrated in the Kala Ghoda, meaning Black Horse, a region in Mumbai. The celebrations began in 1999. Since then it has attracted visitors from different parts of the country and also from different parts of the world.

About the festival

The festival is organized by the Kala Ghoda Association. It is an NGO that works to make Mumbai an art city. The celebrations are around cinema, music, literature, and theatres. Workshops are conducted. Stalls selling crafts and eco-friendly products line up.

Kala Ghoda

The region is in the shape of a crescent. It is the seat of popular heritage buildings of the metropolitan city such as the National Gallery of Modern Art, Jehangir Art Gallery, etc. There is a controversy around the name of the region Kala Ghoda. During British rule, a stone statue of King Edward VII riding a black horse was installed in the region. Since then the region was called Kala Ghoda. In 1965, the statue was removed and placed in Byculla zoo. In 2017, yet another black horse was installed. But this time without a rider!
