Assam Regiment celebrates Platinum Jubilee Ceremony

The Assam Regiment celebrated its 75th Raising Day (Platinum Jubilee). The regiment was raised on 15 June 1941 in Shillong by Lt.Col. Ross Howman.

Key facts

  • The Assam Regiment is an infantry regiment of the Indian Army. The regiment was raised to defend Eastern borders of India and counter the threat of the Japanese invasion of India.
  • The regiment has 22 battalions and recruits exclusively from the seven sister states of the northeast.
  • Assam Rifles is known as “Sentinels of the Northeast”. Its headquarters is located at Laitkor (Shillong). The motto of Assam Rifles is “Friends of the Hill People”.
  • They perform many roles including the provision of internal security under the control of the army through the conduct of counter insurgency and border security operations.
  • While Assam Rifles functions under the Ministry of Defence, its administrative control is under the Ministry of Home Affairs.
  • It has been awarded six Battle Honours – JESSAMI (Nagaland), KOHIMA (Nagaland), ARADURA (Nagaland), MAWLAIK (Burma), KYAUKMYAUNG (Burma) and TOUNGOO (Burma) and one Theatre Award BURMA.
  • The regiment had made outstanding contributions in several operations like Op Rakshak, Op Rhino and Op Meghdoot.  It has also made commendable contributions in United Nation Mission in Cambodia, Congo and Lebanon.
  • It has been adjudged as the best Marching contingent both in Army Day and Republic Day Parade 2016
