Indian Navy ‘SPRINT Challenges’

The “SPRINT Challenges” were launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi unveiled for Indian Navy, on July 18, 2022.

SPRINT Challenge were launched during Swavlamban seminar in New Delhi. The seminar was organised by “Naval Innovation and Indigenisation Organisation (NIIO)”.

What are SPRINT Challenges?

  • SPRINT Challenges were launched with the aim of increasing the usage of indigenous technology in Indian Navy.
  • NIIO have planned to achieve ‘Aarmanirbharta’ in defence. Thus, it has aimed to launch 75 new indigenous technologies or products in the Indian Navy, in collaboration with the Defence Innovation Organisation (DIO).
  • NIIO-DIO collaborative project has been named as SPRINT, that stands for “Supporting Pole-Vaulting in R&D through Innovations for Defence Excellence (iDEX), NIIO and Technology Development Acceleration Cell (TDAC)”.

Swavlamban seminar

It is a two-day seminar, being held on July 18-19 2022. It is aimed at engaging Indian industry and academia for achieving self-reliance in Defence sector. The seminar will provide a common platform for leaders from Academia, Industry, Services and Government, in a bid to ideate and make recommendations for Defence Sector. Sessions dedicated to Innovation, Armament, Aviation and Indigenisation were held. It will also witness outreach to Indian Ocean Region, in order with SAGAR Vision of Indian government.

Naval Innovation and Indigenisation Organisation (NIIO)

Defence Ministry had launched the NIIO in August 2020, to encourage innovation and indigenisation for self-reliance in defence sector, in line with the vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat. It is a three-tiered organisation:

  1. Naval Technology Acceleration Council (N-TAC)- Created to bring the double aspects of innovation and indigenisation together besides providing apex level directives.
  2. Working group– Created under the N-TAC, for implementing the projects.
  3. Technology Development Acceleration Cell (TDAC)– Created to induct new disruptive technology in accelerated time frame.
