IMD hands over Kochi Cyclone Detection Radar (CDR) building to Indian Navy

India Meteorological Department (IMD) has handed over its Kochi Cyclone Detection Radar (CDR) building to Indian Navy. In this regard, Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between Indian Navy (IN) and IMD. The MoU will enable Indian Navy to utilise CDR building within naval premises at Kochi for meteorological purposes.

Kochi Cyclone Detection Radar (CDR) building

It was constructed during period 1983–86 inside Naval Base. It has S-band Cyclone Detection Radar installed by Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL). The facility was operated by IMD from 1987-2017 to provide weather support for civil aviation at old Kochi Airport – presently Naval Air Station INS Garuda.

In 2017, IMD commenced operating new Doppler Weather Radar (DWR) at Mundamveli, Kochi as S-band radar had become obsolete. Since then it was lying vacant and unused. Based on request by Indian Navy, IMD has agreed to hand over building permanently for meteorological purposes.

The building now will be utilised by Indian Naval Meteorological Analysis Centre (INMAC), an operational unit of Indian Navy set up in 2013 with mandate to provide daily meteorological information/ forecasts to users across Indian Navy such as ships and establishments.
