Hydro Electric Power Projects in Ladakh

In November 2021, the Government of India cleared eight hydro power projects. Of these seven are in Ladakh and one in Jammu and Kashmir.

What are the Hydro Electric Power Projects?

They are as follows:

  • DubakShyok in Ladakh: 19 MW
  • Sankoo in Ladakh: 18.5 MW
  • Nimmu Chilling in Ladakh: 24 MW
  • Rongdo in Ladakh: 12 MW
  • MangdumSangra in Ladakh: 19 MW
  • KargilHunderman in Ladakh: 25 MW
  • Tamasha in Ladakh: 12 MW
  • Ratan Nag in Jammu and Kashmir: 10.5 MW

These projects are located in Indus basin. They are to be used only for hydro electric purposes and not for irrigation purposes. According to the Jal Shakti Ministry, as of November 2021, there are 37 hydroelectric projects under construction.

How are these new Hydroelectric power projects classified?

In India, these new hydro electric power projects are classified as small hydro power projects. If the capacity of the hydro electric power project is between 2 MW and 25 MW they are classified as small hydro power projects in India. If the capacity of the hydro power project is between 2 MW and 25 MW they are classified as small hydro power project. If the capacity of hydro power project is between 101 KW and 2 MW, it is classified as mini power project. If the capacity of the hydro power project is less than 100 KW, it is classified as mini power project.
