Amchang Wildlife Sanctuary

In the lush landscapes of the Amchang Wildlife Sanctuary in Assam, India, an extraordinary initiative by the Indian army is taking place. The purpose of this unique ecosystem is to foster a peaceful co-existence with the wild elephants that call the sanctuary their home.

A Haven for Wild Elephants

Amchang Wildlife Sanctuary is estimated to be home to around 90 wild elephants. Recognizing the importance of preserving their natural habitat, the Indian army has undertaken significant efforts to create a suitable environment for these majestic creatures.

Proximity of Narengi Military Station

The Narengi Military Station, covering an area of approximately 3300 acres, is located nearby the Amchang Wildlife Sanctuary. This close proximity facilitates occasional visits from the wild elephants to the military station, highlighting the importance of establishing a harmonious relationship between the two entities.

Creating a Suitable Habitat

To ensure the well-being of the wild elephants, the Indian army has implemented various measures within the sanctuary. Ponds have been constructed to provide a water source for the elephants, while the plantation of fruit trees and grasses offers them a readily available food supply. Additionally, clear paths have been established, allowing the elephants to move freely and without hindrance throughout their territory.

Treating Wild Elephants with Respect

The Indian army’s approach to the wild elephants in the Amchang Wildlife Sanctuary is rooted in respect and non-interference. They recognize the importance of avoiding any actions that may cause trouble or harm to the elephants, fostering an environment where the majestic creatures can thrive undisturbed.

Collaborative Efforts for Conflict Mitigation

Supporting the Indian army in their mission to mitigate human-elephant conflict are the local community, scientific community, and forest officials. These stakeholders work together to develop strategies and initiatives aimed at ensuring the well-being of both the elephants and the local human population.

Preventing Encroachment and Ensuring Space

To prevent wild elephants from entering the military station, several measures have been implemented. The Indian army provides areas within the elephants’ natural corridor, allowing them to follow their established routes without disruption. Additionally, minimum protective measures are in place to safeguard both the elephants and the military station while respecting the elephants’ space and minimizing potential conflicts.

Implementing Surveillance Measures

To monitor the movement of the wild elephants and ensure their safety, the Indian army has implemented advanced surveillance measures. High-resolution CCTV cameras and night vision cameras have been strategically installed throughout the military station, allowing for close monitoring and protection of the elephants.
