Japanese unveils name of its New Imperial Era ‘Reiwa’

Japanese printers have issued the name for its new imperial era which will be set in motion on 1st May 2019 as the public tried to make sense of the meaning of “Reiwa” a day after its unveiling gripped the nation. The name ‘Reiwa’ which consists two Chinese characters, the first meaning ‘good’ or ‘beautiful’ as well as ‘order’ or ‘command’ and the second meaning ‘peace’ or ‘harmony’. The new era begins on May 1 when Crown Prince Naruhito ascends the Chrysanthemum Throne a day after his father Emperor Akihito abdicates.
