Private Bill Introduced to Change Stature of Official Languages

Member of Rajya Sabha from Tamil Nadu, Vaiko on Friday 22nd November 2019 introduce a private member’s bill in the Parliament to give all 22 languages mentioned in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution in the stature of National official languages.
Under Article 343 of the Constitution, the original provision states that ‘The official language of the Union shall be Hindi in Devanagari script’.
Under subclause 3 of Article 343, the original provision states that ” Parliament may by law provide for the use of the English Language’.

The private bill introduced by Vaiko proposes a change as follow:
In article 343, the bill proposes to ?the official language of the Union in addition to Hindi in Devanagari script shall be the languages mentioned in the Eighth Schedule to this Constitution?.

In subclause-3 of article 343 the bill proposes to add ?Parliament may by law provide for the use of the English language or the languages mentioned in the Eighth Schedule to this Constitution?.
