Gandhian Jharna Jhara honoured with Peace and Harmony Award

  • Veteran Gandhian of Bangladesh Ms Jharna Jhara honoured with Chaudhary Ranbir Singh International Peace and Harmony Award. The award was given last time to well-known Gandhian Dr S N Subbarao. 85-years-old Ms Jharna Jhara is working for cause of rural development, welfare of the poor and women, besides promoting peace and harmony in the society through Gandhi Ashram Trust, Noakhali, Bangladesh . This Ashram was established in 1946 by Mahatma Gandhi, soon after Noakhali communal riots. Gandhiji had stayed in this Ashram for some time and appealed to the people to maintain peace and harmony.

FIH recognises HI; to conduct Olympic Qualifier in India

  • The International Hockey Federation (FIH) recognises Hockey India (HI) as the National Federation of the Sport. FIH unanimously decided to conduct the Olympic Qualifiers and other major Hockey tournaments in India.

Hargobind Khorana

  • Nobel laureate Hargobind Khorana, who died in the US on November 9, 2011 was fondly remembered by various academicians. Khorana, an alumnus of the Panjab University, did his BSc and MSc from this university in 1945 when it was situated in Lahore. He later went to England on fellowship for his PhD. He received Nobel Prize in physiology in 1968.

India, Maldives sign 6 documents under an Umbrella Pact

  • India and Maldives today signed six documents including the one that extends 100 million dollars of stand-by credit facility for the Island. The two sides signed the documents concerning Framework Agreement on Cooperation for Development, a Memorandum of Understanding to Combat International Terrorism, Trans-national Crime, Illicit Drug Trafficking and Enhancing Bilateral Cooperation in Capacity Building, Disaster Management and Coastal Security and an agreement on Transfer of Sentenced Persons.

Indian Ocean Rim countries looks beyond WTO for trade

  • The member nations of the Indian Ocean Rim Association for Regional Cooperation (IOR-ARC), discussed the issue of finding an alternatives to improve trade and investment outside the purview of World Trade Organisation (WTO) system. IOR-ARC will take action that will help to enhance cooperation in trade and investment. India’s trade with Indian Ocean member-countries was Rs 280 billion, of which Rs 160 billion accounts for imports.

Choreographer Subal Sarkar dead

  • Renowned dancer and choreographer of Marathi film industry Subal Sarkar died following a prolonged illness, a family friend said. He was 76.
