About Guru Nanak

Guru Nanak (1469 – 1539) was born at Rai Bhoi Ki Talvandi (now Nankana Sahib) near Lahore on April 15, 1469 AD. He was the founder of Sikhism and is the reviver of the pure monotheistic doctrine of Upanishads. The verses composed by him were collected in the Adi Granth, written in Gurmukhi script. He was founder of Sikhism (youngest religion of the world) and the first of the ten Sikh Gurus. His main teaching is of one God who exists in every one of his creations and constitutes the eternal truth. His words are now registered into 974 poetic hymns in Guru Granth Sahib, the holy book of Sikhism. Sikhism is strictly monotheistic and believes that there is only One God. Guru Nanak prefixed the numeral “IK” (one) to the syllable Ongkar to stress the idea of God’s oneness, that the Creator, Preserver, and Destroyer is One. His immediate successor was Guru Angad.
