EIU Global Liveability Index 2022

The Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) recently launched its annual ranking of most liveable cities of the world, and Global Liveability Index for 2022.

Key Points

  • The index highlights some significant changes as compared to Global Liveability Index for 2021.
  • The EIU ranked 173 cities on the basis of several criteria, including infrastructure, political stability, availability to green space, health care and crime rates.

Ranking of the countries

  • The top ten EIU rankings is dominated by Western European cities, including come cities in Canada.
  • As Covid-19 restrictions has lifted, ranking of Calgary has increased by 18 places. It now ties with Zurich, at 3rd
  • Copenhagen has been listed at second place, slightly behind Vienna.
  • In the analysis of mid-sized cities and richest countries typically fare very well.
  • Many top 10 cities are following minimal Covid-19 rules. Schools, museums, eateries, and shops have all resumed operations.

  • Tripoli (Libya)
  • Lagos (Nigeria)
  • Damascus (Syria)

India and its neighbour

The cities in India have been ranked poorly in the list. New Delhi has been ranked 112th, while Mumbai is ranked at 117th position. Karachi city of Pakistan and Dhaka (Bangladesh) are among least liveable cities.

Ukraine and Russia

Kyiv city of Ukraine has not been listed after Russia invaded it in February 2022. Ranking of Russian cities such as Moscow and St Petersburg also decreased due to ‘censorship’ and western sanctions.

Global Liveability Ranking

This yearly assessment is published by Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU). EIU ranks 173 global cities based on their urban quality of life by accessing healthcare, stability, environment, culture, education and infrastructure. In year 2022, Vienna was ranked the most liveable city. Vienna has been ranked 1st in 2018 and 2019 as well. In 2021, Auckland was ranked as most liveable city. Melbourne city of Australia had been ranked as most liveable city for seven consecutive years, from 2011 to 2017.
