Earthshot Prize

The Earthshot prize is awarded annually. It is to be awarded between 2021 and 2030. The prize is awarded by the Royal Foundation. Its headquarters is located in London, England. It is awarded to five winners every year. The award is presented in five different categories. These categories are supported by the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

About Earthshot Prize

It was launched in 2020 by Duke of Cambridge, Prince William. The winners of the prize are selected by the Earthshot Prize Council. It comprises of global ambassadors from different sectors. A prize money of 1 million Euros is awarded to the winners. The prize was mainly created to encourage people who are trying to save the world.

Categories

The categories in which the prizes are awarded are air cleanliness, restoration and protection of nature, ocean revival, climate action and waste-free living.

Earthshot prize 2021

The Earthshot prize 2021 was won by the following:

Takachar of India: The Indian company Takachar won the “Clean our Air” prize at the Earthshot prize 2021. The company won the prize was creating a portable machine that turns agricultural waste into fertilizer.

Republic of Costa Rica: It won the award for doubling its number of trees. It won under the “Restoration” category. The project is now paying its citizens to restore its natural ecosystem. This has led to the revival of the rainforest.

Coral Vita: The Coral Vita is a project of Bahamas. It won the “Revive our oceans” award. The project is run by two friends. They are growing corals in Bahamas. They have designed models to restore the dying coral reefs. They have developed special tanks that help corals grow up to 50 times faster than they normally grow at sea. Corals are the most affected organisms due to climate change and global warming. They are at the verge of extinction.

City of Milan Food Waste Hubs, Italy: The project has collected unused food and given to the needy. The project has reduced food waste and also handled hunger. It won the “Build a waste free world” award

AEM Electrolyser: It won the “Fix our Climate” award. The project made hydrogen by splitting water into hydrogen and oxygen. Hydrogen is usually produced by using fossil fuels.
