Duare Ration Scheme

The Duare Ration Scheme is “Ration at Door step Scheme”. It was launched by the West Bengal Chief Minister in November 2021.

What are the key features of Duare Ration Scheme?

  • The scheme will provide food grains under the Public Distribution System at the door step of state population. It was one of the election promises of the Trinamool Congress.
  • In order to implement the scheme, the State Government of West Bengal has allocated one lakh rupees of financial assistance to each ration dealer in the state. Also, the scheme allocated financial assistance to the ration dealers to hire additional staff to make the scheme a success.

How is the scheme implemented?

Under the scheme, ration dealers will hire staff and buy vehicles. The scheme will make vehicles available in lanes at a distance of 500 metres. The food grains are carried in the vehicles to deliver in homes. The main aim is to reduce the burden of the people in carrying the food grains. If there are five members in the family, a single person cannot carry 25 kgs of food grains. The scheme helps to avoid this burden.

What are the benefits of the scheme?

  • The scheme is to benefit 10 crore people by providing food grains at door steps.
  • The scheme allows the ration dealers to hire two staffs. One will get Rs 10000 of salary per month and the other is paid Rs 5000 month. The State Government is to pay Rs 5,000. The rest is to be paid by the ration dealer. There are 21,000 ration dealers in the state. Thus, the scheme is expected to create 42,000 jobs.

Which other states in the country launched similar schemes?

The Delhi Government launched Doorstep Delivery of Ration scheme. However, it was stalled by the Central Government. The name of the scheme was “Mukhyamantri Ghar Ghar Ration Yojana”. The Delhi Government is trying to implement the scheme since 2018. Concerns were raised over the nomenclature of the scheme. The name “Mukhyamantri” should not be used as the food grains are distributed under National Food Security Act. The State Government had even changed the name to prevent controversies. The issue till day persists.
