Gita Gopinath in ‘Wall of former chief economists’

Gita Gopinath recently got featured on “wall of former chief economists” of the International Monetary Fund (IMF). She is the first woman and second Indian to get this honour.

The first Indian to get featured on “wall of former chief economists” was Raghuram Rajan. He served as the Chief Economist and Director of Research of IMF during 2003-2006.
Gita Gopinath was hired as IMF Chief Economist in October 2018. In December 2021, she got promoted to become IMF’s First Deputy Managing Director.
Miss Gopinath had served as first female chief economist of IMF for three years.
Before her appointment as IMF Chief Economist, she was working as John Zwaanstra Professor of International Studies and Economics at Harvard University’s economics department.
She joined Harvard in 2005. Prior to this, she was working as an assistant professor of economics at Booth School of Business in University of Chicago.

The International Monetary Fund (IMF)

IMF is headquartered in Washington, D.C., as an international financial institution. It comprises of 190 countries. It was established in 1944 but formally started working on December 27, 1945 at the Bretton Woods Conference. Initially, there were 29 member countries. It came into existence with the objective of reconstructing international monetary system.

MD and Chairwoman of IMF

Chief Economist from Bulgaria, Kristalina Georgieva, is the current managing director (MD) and Chairwoman of the IMF. She is holding this position since October 1, 2019. Economist Gita Gopinath got appointed as “First Deputy Managing Director” on January 21, 2022. Miss Gopinath also served as Chief Economist, who got replaced by Pierre-Olivier Gourinchas on January 24, 2022.
