California Oak Fire

Oak Fire recently broke out in Mariposa, California. It is the largest fire so far in 2022, overtaking 17,242 acres area. US firefighters (3000 in numbers) are trying to control the wildfire and stop its eastward expansion towards Yosemite National Park.

Highlights:

  • The oak fire is expanding amidst heatwaves in several parts of United States.
  • The oak fire started in the foothills of Sierra Nevada, located in west of Yosemite National Park.
  • Authorities are still investigating the main cause of the wildfire.
  • Fire is moving towards north-east into the Sierra National Forest.
  • As of July 26, fire has burned 18,532 acres while 26% of the fire has been controlled.
  • It is the largest Oak fire so far, following the similar incidents in 2020 and 2021.

Wildfires have become a common phenomenon in California and other parts of US;

  • Due to continued years of drought and warming climate.
  • Low humidity and high temperatures are also adding fuel to the fire.
  • High number of dead trees and steep slopes in the region are among other reason.
  • The Oak Fire has become a threat to several communities in rural Mariposa County, including Midpines, Darrah, and Jerseydale.
  • In some parts of Sierra Nevada, including Lake Tahoe Basin, visibility has lowered due to the smoke. Air quality level has also reached from unhealthy to hazardous levels.

Yosemite National Park:

Yosemite National Park is located in Sierra Nevada mountains of California.  It is known for the giant & ancient sequoia trees, Tunnel View, granite cliff of El Capitan & iconic vista of towering Bridalveil Fall. It was designated as a World Heritage Site in 1984.
